Saint Lav was a good shepherd and merciful mentor to the people in the city of Catania, under the volcanic mountain Etna. He took great care of the sick and poor. His zeal for faith was as great as his mercy towards the helpless. In that city, a magician named Iliodor appeared who mesmerized the people with various magical skills and corrupted the youth in the city. Once during the liturgy, he entered the church and started to perform magic. Saint Lav approached him, tied him with one end of his omophorion, and took him to the city square. Here he ordered a large fire to be lit and when the fire was burning, he entered it alone with Iliodor. Iliodor burned to death, but Saint Lav remained unharmed by the fire. From this, all who were deceived by Iliodor and saw him as a god were ashamed. Merciful and zealous Lav became known throughout the kingdom as a great miracle worker who, through his holy miracles, helps people. After his death, healing oil flowed from his relics. He rested in the 8th century.
