A prominent Bulgarian businessman, Veliko Zhelev, has been arrested by the police for possible coercion according to local media reports. Searches were conducted at Zhelev’s offices in Sofia and his property in Varna. The businessman is currently at the location of the searches in the capital city. It is alleged that Zhelev used violence against his employee and forced him to sign false documents. Zhelev is a former head of the State Agency for the Bulgarians Abroad, and also serves as the chairman of the board of directors of Hydrostroy, a company that recently won a BGN 360m contract to build a tunnel under the Shipka Pass. Hydrostroy primarily deals with road construction and maintenance.
