Former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski commented on Donald Trump’s speech about bringing back classical style architecture. Trump plans to change the facades of buildings in the US, getting rid of bad and ugly buildings and replacing them with the grand Classical style of Western civilization. This idea is similar to Skopje 2014, where monuments of patriots and historical figures in Washington, New York, and other cities have been set up. However, Gruevski also notes that building new buildings in historical classical styles in modern times is not new in the US. In a recent visit to the archives museum and the National Art Gallery in Washington, he noticed that the architecture resembled that of the Archaeological Museum or State Audit object. When he asked why buildings were built in classical styles in the 20th century in a city that didn’t have a history associated with classical architecture, the answer was because the leaders were inspired by it.
In Skopje, some citizens are against new classical-style buildings and facades, and foreign factors support them. However, Gruevski suggests that this statement shows that the trend of replacing facades with new classical or historical styles could be a new trend in the US.
