The Supreme Court of Crimea has sentenced a citizen of St. Petersburg to six years in prison for treason after being found guilty of attempting to cross from Crimea to Odessa and join the Ukrainian military, according to the court’s press service. According to the prosecution’s allegations, the 40-year-old man from St. Petersburg resisted Russia’s attack on Ukraine and decided to travel to Ukraine to participate in the country’s military activities on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as reported by RIA Novosti. To do this, the defendant contacted representatives of the Ukrainian volunteer military unit over the internet, which recruits Russians and organizes their travel to Ukraine. His first attempt to cross the state border through the Bryansk region was unsuccessful. Then, he was offered to reach Ukraine by sea through Crimea. To carry out this plan, the convict bought a diving suit, fins, a compass, an underwater battery lamp, and bags made of waterproof fabric. In August last year, he arrived in Crimea and then set out to swim across the Black Sea towards Odessa. He was discovered by a Russian border patrol boat on August 8 near the village of Olenivka in Crimea and was then arrested. The court classified the defendant’s actions as preparation for high treason and illegally crossing the border of the Russian Federation. (MIA)
