The Iranian capital city of Tehran saw protests from concerned parents due to a series of poison attacks against girls in dozens of schools, according to Iranian news agencies and videos shared on social media. Hundreds of female students have been affected by an unknown illness in recent months. Iranian authorities suspect that the girls may have been poisoned and blame Tehran’s enemies.
The Iranian health minister stated that the girls are “more easily poisoned” in the attacks, while some politicians said they may have been targeted by hardline Islamist groups opposed to girls’ education. The Minister of Interior announced on Saturday that “suspicious samples” had been found and are being investigated.
“In field studies, suspicious samples have been found and are being examined to determine the causes of the students’ illness, and the results will be announced as soon as possible,” said Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli in a statement carried by the official news agency IRNA.
