The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) has reacted to the physical attack on Archimandrite Nikodim Tsarknjas, an 80-year-old Macedonian Orthodox priest in Greece, by a group of young Greeks. While driving home, Archimandrite Tsarknjas’ path was intentionally blocked by two vehicles, preventing him from continuing to drive, right in front of the Pontic “Black Sea Club of Almopia” in S’botsko/Aridea. After politely asking the group to move the vehicles that blocked his path, they began verbally attacking him with personal and religious insults. They then intensified the attack by damaging and smashing the car’s window and attempting to physically harm him by trying to enter the car. Luckily, Archimandrite Tsarknjas managed to escape further injury and left the area as quickly as possible. He immediately reported the incident to the local police and filed lawsuits against the perpetrators. Obviously, this was not a random attack, but a planned and deliberate intimidation of an elderly man, according to UMD. They called on the Greek government, the European Union, and all relevant international human rights organizations to investigate and stop the intimidation of Macedonian minorities in Greece. They also requested the Macedonian government to condemn the attack and establish a zero-tolerance policy towards the mistreatment of Macedonian minorities and their fundamental human rights in neighboring countries and around the world. UMD respectfully appealed to the Greek government, foreign delegations in Greece, the Helsinki Committee in Greece, and the European Court of Human Rights to put an end to these unjustified attacks on minority groups in Greece. “We urge the Greek authorities to condemn the members of the group who carried out the attack and set an example by prosecuting the perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law,” the organization said.
