China’s defense budget, the second largest in the world after the US, will increase by 7.2% in 2023, according to reports. The country’s defense spending is already set to rise by 7.1% in 2022. The Ministry of Finance announced that the budget for defense will be CNY 1.5537tn ($225bn), which is still about three times smaller than Washington’s budget. Premier Li Keqiang called for intensified military training and readiness, as well as innovative strategic plans. Recent high-level US officials accused China of wanting to attack Taiwan in the coming years and of operating a fleet of military balloons that spies on the rest of the world. NATO has considered China a “challenge to the interests” of alliance countries since last year. China stresses that its military is purely “defensive” and has only one foreign military base in Djibouti, compared to the hundreds of US military bases.
