According to Russian scientists who conducted a study with approximately 1,000 women and men, people seeking help do not always need advice, but more often understanding and comfort. For two weeks, five times a day, participants were asked whether they shared their negative emotional experiences with whom and why. They were also asked about the reaction they received when sharing those experiences with others.
The results showed that they preferred to share negative experiences with loved ones or family members rather than colleagues or acquaintances. Moreover, when speaking about their problems, most participants hoped to receive support from listeners in the form of understanding and a friendly relationship, rather than advice about their wrong actions.
More than anything, people want others to listen and understand them, rather than criticizing them for their mistakes and giving advice, no matter how well-intentioned it may be.
Furthermore, when given the choice between emotional support and empathy versus advice and recommendations, everyone preferred to seek only emotional support and empathy, without the need for advice.
