Reports on social media indicate that Ukrainian troops in the town of Bakhmut are surrounded and running out of ammunition. The situation in the area has become extremely tense, with conflicting reports over whether the troops will be withdrawn. Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin has claimed that Russian forces have practically encircled the town and called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to withdraw his troops, stating that they will be alive for only a day or two longer. Videos of desperate Ukrainian soldiers in Bakhmut have been circulating on social media, with one soldier claiming they are “surrounded on all sides” and have no ammunition left. The leader of the Wagner private military company, which is fighting in eastern Ukraine, also spoke out, asserting that the units had practically encircled Bakhmut and that the lives of civilians in the town were in danger. He called on President Zelensky to withdraw his forces before it was too late. Bakhmut has been the site of intense fighting in recent months, with Ukrainian forces struggling to hold the town against Russian-backed militia. In addition to the risk to human life, the fall of Bakhmut would give Russia control over key infrastructure in the strategic industrial region of Donbas, which has been a primary goal of the invasion that began on February 24, 2022.
