The court in Brussels has decided today that Eva Kaili, the former vice-president of the European Parliament, will remain in custody for at least two more months. Earlier this week, her defense requested that she be released with an ankle monitor, according to local media.
Furthermore, the court also decided to keep MEP Mark Tarabella in custody. Kaili was arrested in December, while Tarabella was detained at the beginning of February.
Meanwhile, the court released Kaili’s friend Francesco Giorgi, her father, as well as another alleged accomplice to the case. Former MEP Antonio Panzeri, who was accused of leading an organized crime group, remains in custody after becoming a witness for the prosecution and accepting a sentence under the legal minimum. Kaili, Tarabella, and Panzeri were all accused of corruption in favor of Qatar and Morocco.
