Boris Pistorius, the newly elected German Defense Minister, stated that the German army is not prepared to defend the country in case of an attack. During a meeting with members of his Social Democratic Party (SPD), he said, “We do not have armed forces capable of defending the country from a brutal offensive and aggressive war.” According to him, the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) do not have enough personnel or equipment due to decades of neglect by the federal government. For this reason, he believes that Germany will have to invest much more in defense to reach the necessary NATO standards. The highest-ranking officer in the Bundeswehr, Lieutenant General Alfonso Mais, confirmed Pistorius’ statements and said that not even the 100 billion euros allocated to the German army by Chancellor Olaf Scholz would be enough for it to be capable of fighting a war. Armin Papperger of Rheinmetall, Germany’s largest military supplier, told the media that Germany had transported two of the most important defense systems intended for the defense of the capital city, Berlin, to Ukraine.
