Today, according to the Calendar of the Macedonian Orthodox Church, we celebrate Saint Lav, Bishop of Catania. Saint Lav was a good shepherd and a merciful teacher to the people in the city of Catania, located under the volcanic Mount Etna. He cared for the sick and the poor and his zeal for the faith was as great as his mercy towards the helpless. In that city, a magician named Iliodor appeared, who fascinated the people with various magical abilities and corrupted the youth of the city. During a liturgy, he entered the Church and began performing magic. Saint Lav approached him, tied him up with one end of his omophorion and led him to the city’s marketplace. He ordered a large fire to be lit and when the flames rose, he entered the fire himself, pulling Iliodor inside with him. Iliodor burned and Saint Lav remained unaffected by the fire. This incident caused all those who were captivated by Iliodor and saw him as a deity to feel ashamed. Saint Lav became famous throughout the kingdom as a great miracle worker who helped the people with his blessed wonders. After his death, healing oil flowed from his relics. He rested in the 8th century. Additionally, the passage speaks of Saint Sadok, who was a bishop in Persia after Saint Simeon. In a dream, Saint Simeon appeared to him and said, “Yesterday I suffered, today it is your turn.” Saint Sadok interpreted this message to mean that he would suffer that year. True to the dream, King Sapor arrested him along with the guilty clerics and other people and brought them to trial. First, he ordered them to worship fire and the sun as deities. Sadok replied, “We are willing to die for our God, but we will not worship the sun and fire.” They were then tortured and sentenced to death by the sword. Before his death, Saint Sadok offered this prayer to God: “Wash us in our blood from our sins, O God!” His priests and faithful followers gave up their bodies to death and their souls to God. They suffered in the year 342 or 344. Both Saints have tropars, or hymns, in their honor which are included in the passage.
