Currently, the rule in the United States is that unvaccinated individuals against coronavirus cannot enter the country, a rule that will be lifted on May 11. However, Djokovic may still appear on the courts in the US.
James Blake, the director of the Miami tournament, has spoken out in the media, revealing that they have requested a special permit from the authorities for Djokovic to compete because he currently poses no danger. “The rules officially change on May 11, but we asked for an exception from the US government because we do not see any danger. They set that date due to the calendar, and we cannot organize the tournament after May 11. We would like Djokovic to play here, and we emphasized that it would be nice if Djokovic were given permission to compete for everyone,” Blake stated.
The Serbian tennis player is included on the list of participants, but the final decision will be made by the government. “We’ll see what happens; unfortunately, it’s not up to us. He’s on the list, and he’s won the tournament six times, so we’d love for him to have the opportunity to play for a seventh trophy. We’ve done what we can. If Djokovic is allowed to play at Indian Wells, we’ll be ready to welcome him to Miami as well,” Blake said.
