The Bulgarian health minister, Asen Medzidiev, stated that Bulgaria is destroying large quantities of expired Covid-19 vaccines and has no plans to renew its reserves. In an interview with state television, Medzidiev said that “at the moment, no one wants to be vaccinated.” Huge amounts of expired vaccines have already been destroyed, with 2.8 million doses set to expire this year. Medzidiev has informed the European Commission that Bulgaria wants to end its agreement with BioNTech/Pfizer, under which it is obligated to purchase coronavirus vaccines until 2025. Medzidiev noted that this position is supported by Poland, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania. Bulgaria has the lowest vaccination rate in the European Union, with only 30% of its 6.5 million inhabitants receiving a basic dose of immunization, according to official data.
