The sister of Matteo Messina Denaro, the last godfather of the Sicilian Mafia, has been arrested after police searched her house and found notes giving instructions to the collaborators of the criminal group. Rosalia was arrested after police searched her house in Castelvetrano, Sicily, and found notes with instructions from her brother to collaborators in criminal activities. According to investigators, Rosalia had been begging her brother for 30 years to avoid arrest. She was also responsible for keeping their money and transmitting information to their collaborators while her brother was on the run. The Italian police reported that handwritten messages and instructions from Matteo Messina Denaro were found in his sister’s armchair. During his hiding, Denaro managed criminal activities through the discovered notes, giving instructions to other members of the organization on the next steps in executing tasks. “Rosalia Messina Denaro was a person of absolute trust, who led a network of instructions through which Denaro delivered orders to other collaborators,” said Alfredo Montalto, the judge who ordered her arrest. Denaro wrote “I am accused of being a member of the Mafia. At this moment, I consider it an honour,” in his handwriting on one of the pieces of paper found by the police.
